Are You Engaging in Stress Competitions?
Did you ever hear the term, Misery Poker?
I just read about this last week in the Wall Street Journal.
You may not have known you were playing, but this is what it involves...
We want to prove that our stress is worse than anyone else's.
Things are getting a little weird. Not only are we are all so stressed out,
now we want a lot of credit for it!
Elizabeth Bernstein, author of the article, says that this behavior has been dubbed, "Misery Poker," and it is not helping anyone at all.
Couples may find themselves competing, because they are just so tired at the end of the day that whoever is the most tired, may get to opt out of childcare or chores.
Bernstein points out that "there are some who use stress as a measure of success." College students who stay up all night studying, compete with other students over who finally went to sleep first.
People do not want other people to think they have free time.
Whoa! What is wrong with this picture?
What has happened in our society, in our world, that having time to yourself,
free time, time to think or breathe, or dance, is seen as a bad thing?
Bernstein says that the more time you spend complaining about your life, the less time you have to try to fix it.
You could start driving yourself crazy here, going around in circles--
"I don't have free time because I am busy and stressed,so I complain
about that, then I waste time, and then I have even less free time, and,
and, and....." STOP!
If you think this could be you, here is the solution:
Stop it.
Stop complaining.
Stop acting as if being stressed out is a good thing. It is not.
Complaining is stress-inducing and not doing you any good at all. (So,so
bad for your health!)
And it is tiring for other people to listen to.
Try changing a little bit at a time. For a half hour each day, only say
nice things.
At work, stop joining in the negative conversation.
Become more aware of your thoughts and words.
Pay attention to the good things going on.
Be grateful for all you have.
Add to the half hour, until it becomes almost all of your day, then your
whole day.
When you realize you can still get attention and have people listen to you when you speak in a positive, upbeat way, everyone will benefit!
Voila! Great Stress Reducing Techniques!
(Remember, I can help you reduce your stress!
Ask me about my 3-month programs!)
